Seasoned RVer? Don’t Forget These Maintenance Checks

Even experienced RV owners can miss a few important maintenance items. Discover what deserves a second look before your next road trip.

Even experienced RV owners can overlook a few important maintenance tasks. After years of camping, it is easy to focus on the obvious things like tire pressure, batteries and winterization while smaller issues quietly develop in the background. Staying on top of these details can help prevent expensive repairs and keep your RV ready for the road.

One area that is often overlooked is tire age. RV tires can still have plenty of tread while beginning to deteriorate from UV exposure, heat and long periods of sitting. It is also worth checking wheel lug torque, wheel bearings and suspension components regularly, especially before longer trips.

Roof and seal inspections are another important habit. Small cracks around vents, skylights, windows and exterior seams can allow moisture inside long before you notice a visible leak. Slide-out seals should also be inspected and maintained to help prevent water intrusion and premature wear.

Some of the easiest maintenance items to forget are the ones you cannot see. Road vibration can loosen plumbing fittings, batteries can slowly discharge during storage and dust or debris can collect around refrigerator and appliance vents. Freshwater systems should be sanitized periodically, while water heaters may need flushing or anode-rod inspection depending on the system.

The underside of the RV deserves attention as well. Check for damaged panels, sagging insulation, water intrusion or signs of rodents. Air-conditioner filters, propane connections, wastewater valves and safety equipment should also be inspected regularly.

Before each camping season, take time to test smoke, propane and carbon-monoxide detectors, check plumbing and electrical systems and make sure the RV is loaded within its proper weight limits. Even seasoned RV owners benefit from a thorough inspection before hitting the highway.
