Buying An RV for the First Time: Things To Keep In Mind
One of the adventurous ways to travel is in an RV across North America, but purchasing and owning a recreational vehicle should not be a last-minute choice. There's a lot you should know before making one of the largest expenditures of your life and embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime journey.
Before you buy your first RV, you should ask yourself a few things. Buying an RV, whether for under $10,000 or over $250,000, is a big investment, and you want to be sure you choose something you like and won't regret later.

Size Matters?
These questions are especially essential if you have older children or intend to travel for an extended period of time. Inquire about the size of the sleeping quarters. If you have three or older children, or if you want to bring adult companions, be sure that a bunk that is claimed to sleep two is truly large enough to sleep two!
Another size to inquire about is the size of the holding tank. Larger holding tank sizes are recommended if you want to live in the RV and many of the areas you park are off-grid. And, if you're going away for the weekend with a massive group of people or a large family, you won't want to gather up everything to go empty the holding tanks every other day.
Make sure your RV's holding tanks are large enough to support your RV lifestyle.

RVs are available with either 30- or 50-amp utilities. If you know your preferred campsite only has 30-amp service, make sure your RV has 30-amp service as well. If you frequently belong to the ‘dry camp,’ you should make sure the RV you purchase has a generator. Check that you have enough hot water for the purpose you plan to use it for. Many RVs include a 6-gallon water heater, which is more than plenty. If this is insufficient, search for an RV that has an on-demand water heater or a bigger hot water tank.

If you're looking for towables, make sure your truck is capable of towing the RV you want. While considering purchasing a trailer, you should first determine if the car you're presently driving has the towing capability to transport it. Are you driving a truck or SUV? With a truck or an SUV, you should be OK, but if you're driving a smaller car, you might want to consider other choices. Make sure the RV you want fits inside that weight restriction. Furthermore, consider where you will be travelling. If you buy an RV that exceeds the maximum weight restriction of your truck's towing capability, you may have difficulty pulling it up into the mountains.
